Is there such a thing as an absolute truth?

When reading about astrology I found this story:

One day, a legend tells, the astrologer of a small Indian kingdom announced that a rain would pour on the entire country that makes people mad. The news quickly spread and everyone, both the modest and powerful started saving up water. The predicted rain began. The poor people, who had few reserves soon had to taste it and became mad. Next up were the merchants, the rich and finally the ministers themselves….All were forced to drink the contaminated water. Only the king, with his huge storage remained lucent… And everyone in the kingdom convinced him that he was the one who was mad. What truth is is a matter of consensus. Take war for example. Those who lost the war are all cowards while those who slayed those cowards are heroes. In ancient Greece morality about education was totally different from the prevailing conditions in the current educational world.

Nietzsche also stated:

Is there such a thing as an absolute truth? Well, Buddhist believe in a certain wisdom that is absolute. A lot has been speculated about it but the only way to embody that truth can only be acquired – that’s right – by meditation.

Toen ik een boek over astrologie kwam ik het volgend verhaal tegen:

Op een dag, zo gaat de legende, kondigde een astroloog van een klein Indisch koninkrijk aan dat er een regen zou vallen die iedereen gek zou maken. Het nieuws verspreidde zich snel en iedereen, zowel de bescheiden mensen als de machtigen begon water te hamsteren. De voorspelde regen begon te vallen. De armen, die weinig reserves hadden proefden er snel van en werden gek. Daarna overkwam de handelaars hetzelfde en uiteindelijk moesten ook de ministers eraan geloven… Ze werden allemaal genoodzaakt ervan te drinken. Alleen de koning, met zijn immense voorraad bleef helder… En iedereen slaagde erin de koning ervan te overtuigen dat hij diegene was die gek was. De waarheid is een zaak van consensus. Neem oorlog bijvoorbeeld. De verliezers van de oorlog zijn allemaal lafaards terwijl zij die sommige van die lafaards afslachten worden onthaald als helden. In het oude Griekenland ware de opvattingen over opvoeding totaal verschillend van de huidige.

Is er zoiets als een absolute waarheid? Wel, Boeddhisten geloven in zo’n absolute wijsheid. Er werd al veel over gespeculeerd maar de enige manier om die waarheid te belichamen kan alleen verkregen worden in – jawel – meditatie.
