I’m Bas and I write with my left hand. When I was young, that was only just accepted. I remember how we were allowed to experiment with which hand we wrote the smoothest when writing. For me, that was the lefty, no doubt. The teacher thought it was important that we write with a fountain pen. For left-handers, that’s hell. Fortunately, at that time they still knew blotting paper. After some practice with this, it still managed to write in this way.
At school, my left-handedness had another advantage. Because there were two of us sitting at a desk. If there was a test, a satchel had to be placed between two students on each bench. My neighbor, Anna, saw my leather satchel and secretly wrote a message on it. When the test was over, I could read what Anna had written. Because I was on the right side of the table, it was easier for me to leave a message on my own satchel with my left hand.
In the best sushi restaurant in the world, they also watch your hands. The owner of the place looks carefully as you eat with which hand you use. When he serves the next bite, he puts them in front of you in such a way that it is easier to nibble. When I order a coffee in a restaurant, I test whether they also take this into account. I say, “For me, half and half, and I’m left-handed.”, for example. But that is only half the story. What happens next is too dumb by half. My left side, my better,half never faces the handle of the cup.
I don’t really think about what hand I use for which task anymore. Being right-handed is such an obvious thing to many that I have learned to do certain things with my right hand.
Being left-handed also has its advantages. In the summer, I help my father in his office. At that time, I am in touch with the representatives. The phone is buzzing during that period. During those conversations I must write and use the computer, I control my mouse with the right hand and write with the left hand. Dad already congratulated me on that way of working because it’s a lot more efficient.
Je suis Bas et j’écris avec ma main gauche. Quand j’étais jeune, cela venait à peine d’être accepté. Je me souviens comment nous avons été autorisés à expérimenter avec quelle main nous avons écrit le plus lisse lors de l’écriture. Pour moi, c’était de gauche, sans doute. L’enseignant a pensé qu’il était important que nous écrivions avec un stylo plume. Pour les gauchers, c’est l’enfer. Heureusement, à cette époque, ils connaissaient encore le papier à rouler. Après un peu de pratique avec cela, il a quand même réussi à écrire comme ça.
À l’école, mon gaucher avait un autre avantage. Parce que nous étions deux assis dans une banque. S’il y avait un test, un cartable devait être placé sur chaque banc entre deux élèves. Ma voisine, Anna, a vu mon cartable en cuir et a secrètement écrit un message dessus. Une fois le test terminé, j’ai pu lire ce qu’Anna avait écrit. Parce que j’étais sur le côté droit du bureau, il était plus facile pour moi de laisser un message sur mon cartable avec ma main gauche.
Dans le meilleur restaurant de sushis au monde, ils surveillent également vos mains. Le propriétaire de l’établissement regarde attentivement pendant que vous mangez avec quelle main vous le faites. Lorsqu’il sert la prochaine bouchée, il les met devant vous de manière qu’il soit plus facile de le manger. Lorsque je commande un café dans un restaurant, je teste s’ils en tiennent également compte. Par exemple, je dis : « Pour moi, un café au lait, et je suis gaucher. » Et à chaque fois, je reçois un laid café dans la mauvaise sense.
Je ne pense plus vraiment à quelle main j’utilise pour quelle tâche. Être droitier est une chose tellement évidente pour beaucoup que j’ai appris à faire certaines choses avec ma main droite.
Être gaucher a aussi ses avantages. En été, j’aide mon père dans l’entreprise. Je communiquerai avec les représentants. Je téléphone presque tout le temps pendant cette période. Parce que pendant ces conversations, je dois écrire et utiliser l’ordinateur, je contrôle ma souris avec la main droite et j’écris avec la main gauche. Papa m’a déjà félicité pour cette façon de travailler parce que c’est beaucoup plus efficace.
Ik ben Bas en ik schrijf met mijn linkerhand. Toen ik jong was, werd dat nog maar net aanvaard. Ik weet nog hoe we bij het schrijven zelf mochten experimenteren met welke hand we het vlotst schreven. Voor mij was dat links, zonder twijfel. De juf vond het belangrijk dat we met een vulpen schreven. Voor linkshandigen is dat een hel. Gelukkig kende men in die tijd nog vloeipapier. Na wat oefenen hiermee lukte het toch aardig om zo te schrijven.
Op school had mijn linkshandigheid nog een ander voordeel. We zaten namelijk met twee aan een bank. Als er een toets was, moest er op elke bank tussen twee leerlingen een boekentas gezet worden. Mijn buurmeisje, Anna, zag mijn leren boekentas en schreef er stiekem een boodschap op. Als de toets voorbij was, kon ik lezen wat Anna geschreven had. Omdat ik aan de rechterkant van de bank zat was het eenvoudiger voor mij om met mijn linkerhand op mijn beurt een boodschap achter te laten op mijn boekentas.
In het beste sushi restaurant ter wereld letten ze ook op je handen. De eigenaar van de tent kijkt terwijl je eet aandachtig met welke hand je dat doet. Wanneer hij het volgende hapje serveert, legt hij ze zo voor je dat het makkelijker is om je hapje op te eten. Als ik in een restaurant een koffie bestel test ik of zij hier ook rekening mee houden. Dan zeg ik bijvoorbeeld: “Voor mij een koffie, en ik ben linkshandig.” En elke keer weer kreeg meneer koffie die verkeerd geserveerd bleek.
Ik sta er eigenlijk helemaal niet meer bij stil welke hand ik voor welke taak gebruik. Rechtshandig zijn is voor velen zo’n evidentie dat ik dan maar geleerd heb bepaalde dingen met mijn rechterhand te doen.
Linkshandig zijn heeft ook zijn voordelen. In de zomer help ik mijn vader in de zaak. Ik ben dan in contact met de vertegenwoordigers. De telefoon staat in die periode roodgloeiend. Omdat tijdens die gesprekken moet schrijven en de computer gebruiken, bedien ik mijn muis met de rechterhand en schrijf ik met de linkerhand. Pa heeft mij al gefeliciteerd met die manier van werken omdat dat een pak efficiënter is.
