I’ve set myself a challenge for this year. It is my objective to find a song each week that reflects how I felt in that past week. In my blog you will find a link to the song on YouTube. Week 29 – Have a little faith in me  – Joe Cocker

Faith

When I go to sleep before an important day I manage to sleep well because of my trust in my religion. I trust that whatever karma will throw at me will be just and exactly what I need at that moment. I use Buddhist terms to explain this but that does not mean that people who have other religions cannot experience these moments of trust in destiny. To those who are not religious it may seem like having no control but if you trust in something higher why not use his/her support?

Faith in me

Some religions, especially Buddhism, may seem self-centred. The Buddhist answer to that is that as long as you cannot help yourself, you cannot help others. If we dig deeper into Buddhist philosophy we discover the notion of non-self. When the Dalai Lama visited Holland he said that ‘non-self’ is a concept that only Buddhism has. Non-self means that there is no difference between in- and outside, between you and me. Nothing can exist on its own. It takes years of training to embody this truth but people who have accomplished this goal make no difference whatsoever between their interests and those of others. In fact, (s)he has no own interests any more, there are only the interests of the others.

Faith in something

In Europe religion is losing ground. And yet, when you ask people about their spirituality most will answer that they have no religion but that they do believe in “something”. When Cardinal Daneels, a Belgian leader of the Catholic Church in Belgium, was interviewed he mentioned wise words about the painting “The scream” by Edvard Munch. What he said was that the fact that the person in the painting screams proves that (s)he believes that there is someone or something who is willing to hear him/her.

Geloof

Als ik ga slapen vlak voor een belangrijke dag val ik makkelijk in slap vanwege mijn vertrouwen in mijn godsdienst. Ik geloof dat wat mijn karma ook brengt, dat het rechtvaardig zal zijn en precies wat ik nodig heb op dat moment. Ik gebruik nu wel Boeddhistische termen om mezelf verstaanbaar te maken maar dat wil niet zeggen dat mensen met een ander geloof dit verrouwen in het lot niet kunnen ervaren. Zij die niet religieus zijn zullen dit misschien zien als de controle opgeven maar als je vertrouwt in iets hogers, waarom dan niet van zijn/haar steun gebruik maken?

 Geloof in mezelf

Sommige godsdiensten, o.a. het Boeddhisme, lijken nogal egocentrisch. Het Boeddhistische antwoord hierop is dat zolang je jezelf niet kan helpen, je anderen ook niet kunnen helpen. Als we wat dieper graven in de Boeddhistische filosofie, ontdekken we de term ‘geen-zelf’. Toen de Dalai Lama Nederland bezocht zei hij dat dit concept het Boeddhisme onderscheidt van andere godsdiensten. Geen-zelf betekent dat er geen verschil is tussen binnen en buiten, tussen jou en mij. Niets kan op zichzelf bestaan. Het vergt jaren oefenen om deze waarheid te belichamen maar wie dit heeft bereikt maakt geen onderscheid eer tussen hun eigen belangen en die van de ander. Eigenlijk heeft die persoon geen eigen belangen meer, enkel die van anderen.

Geloof in iets

In Europa is religie terrein aan het verliezen. En toch, als je mensen bevraagt over hun spiritualiteit zullen de meesten zeggen dat ze geen godsdienst hebben maar dat ze wel in “iets” geloven. Toen Kardinaal Danneels, een gezaghebbende persoon uit de Belgische Katholieke Kerk, werd geïnterviewd zei hij wijze woorden over het schilderij “De schreeuw” van Edvard Munch. Hij zei dat het feit dat de persoon in het schilderij brult bewijst dat hij/zij gelooft dat er iets of iemand is die bereid is naar hem/haar te luisteren.

Gewoon enkele gedachten.
